Tiffany Ceiling Lights Buying Guide
A ceiling light affects the whole room, so choose it by clearance, scale and useful brightness as well as glass colour.
Choose the fitting type
Flush and semi-flush fittings keep the shade closer to the ceiling and suit rooms where head clearance is limited. Pendants and chandeliers create a stronger feature and work well above tables, islands or in taller spaces.
Measure total drop
Measure from the ceiling to the lowest point, including rose, chain, rod and shade. In a walkway, protect head clearance. Above a fixed table, a lower fitting may be practical because nobody walks beneath it.
Match scale to the room
Compare shade diameter with room width and the furniture below. A small shade can disappear in a large room; an oversized fitting can dominate a compact space. Make a cardboard template when dimensions are difficult to picture.
Plan brightness
Coloured glass absorbs and redirects light. Pale amber and cream generally transmit more than dense blue or red. Check bulb count and combined lumens rather than relying on wattage. A warm-white LED around 2700K often complements stained glass.
If dimming is required, bulbs and dimmer must be compatible. Confirm cap type, bulb dimensions and the fitting's maximum wattage.
Use the right design for the location
Geometric patterns can sit calmly in kitchens and dining rooms, while floral or dragonfly shades create a stronger focal point. Consider the appearance when switched off as well as illuminated.
Installation
Stained-glass shades may be heavier than fabric shades. The ceiling support and supplied hardware must be suitable. Installation should follow the product instructions and current electrical requirements; use a qualified electrician where appropriate.
