Tiffany Floor Lamps Buying Guide

A floor lamp is useful when a room needs light beside a chair or sofa but there is no suitable table. With a Tiffany-style shade, it also adds colour at eye level, so proportion and placement matter as much as the pattern.

Decide what the lamp must do

For reading, the shade should place light over the shoulder and onto the page while hiding the bulb from direct view. For atmosphere, a more deeply coloured shade can create a softer glow. One lamp may contribute to both jobs, but a dark shade should not be expected to light an entire room.

Measure height from the seated position

Sit in the chair where the lamp will be used. Check where the lower edge of the shade will fall relative to your eyes. A visible bulb causes glare; a shade positioned too low may block useful light. Overall height alone is not enough, because shade depth and opening also affect the result.

Check the base footprint

Measure the actual floor area beside and behind the furniture. A heavy base provides stability but may not slide beneath a sofa. Keep it clear of reclining mechanisms, doors and busy walking routes. If children or pets use the room, choose an especially stable position.

Plan the cable route

Confirm that a socket is available without stretching the cable across a walkway. Do not trap the lead beneath furniture or rugs. Check the switch location: a foot switch, inline switch or pull chain should be reachable from the intended position.

Choose glass for useful brightness

Pale cream, amber and light green glass generally transmit more light than dense blue, red or purple sections. For reading, consider both the opening beneath the shade and the bulb's lumen output. Warm-white LEDs around 2700K usually complement stained glass and produce less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Always confirm cap type, bulb dimensions and maximum wattage. If a floor lamp uses multiple bulbs, compare their combined lumens.

Match the room without over-matching

Repeat one or two colours from upholstery, curtains, flooring or artwork. A geometric shade works calmly in an already patterned room; floral and dragonfly designs become a stronger focal point in simpler surroundings.
