Best Bulbs for Tiffany Lamps
The bulb changes how stained glass looks and how useful the lamp feels. Choose it by fitting, dimensions, lumens and colour temperature—not simply by the wattage printed on the box.
Start with the correct cap
Check the product specification or existing bulb holder for the required cap type. Common fittings include Edison screw and bayonet caps in different sizes. Never force a bulb that does not fit correctly.
Check physical dimensions
A bulb may have the right cap but still be too tall or wide for the shade. Confirm that it will sit beneath the glass without touching it or protruding into direct view. Compact candle or golf-ball shapes can be useful where space is limited, but follow the fitting's instructions.
Use lumens to compare brightness
Watts describe energy consumption; lumens describe light output. Coloured glass absorbs some light, so a deeply coloured shade may need more lumen output than a pale shade for the same useful brightness. In a multi-bulb fitting, add the lumens of all bulbs to estimate the total.
Choose colour temperature
Warm white around 2700K generally suits amber, red and green stained glass and creates the familiar evening glow. Neutral or cool white can make blues appear crisper, but may flatten warmer colours. Personal preference and room use still matter, so test one bulb before buying a full set.
Why LEDs are practical
LED bulbs use less electricity and emit less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs. This is helpful beneath decorative shades. Choose a reputable bulb with the correct voltage and fitting, and never exceed the lamp's stated maximum wattage.
Dimming requires compatibility
If a lamp is connected to a dimmer, both the LED bulb and dimmer must be designed to work together. An incompatible combination can flicker, buzz, fail to dim smoothly or remain faintly lit. Multi-bulb fittings should normally use matching compatible bulbs.
Clear or frosted?
A clear bulb can create brighter points and sparkle through textured glass. A frosted bulb diffuses light and may reduce visible hot spots. If the bulb is partly visible beneath the shade, frosting often produces more comfortable light.
Brightness by purpose
An atmospheric accent lamp needs less output than a reading lamp. For reading, make sure useful light escapes below the shade and reaches the page. For general room lighting, consider several light sources rather than trying to make one coloured-glass lamp excessively bright.
