How to Clean and Care for a Tiffany Lamp
Dust gradually dulls stained glass and settles along solder lines. Gentle, regular cleaning is safer than allowing heavy dirt to build up and then using strong chemicals or vigorous scrubbing.
Switch off and let the lamp cool
Disconnect a table or floor lamp from the socket. For a hard-wired fitting, switch off the appropriate electrical supply before working near lampholders or wiring. Allow bulbs and metal parts to cool completely.
Begin with dry dusting
Support the shade securely and use a clean, soft microfibre cloth or soft brush. Work gently across glass and metal lines without pressing on individual pieces. Do not lift or carry a lamp by the shade.
For light surface marks
Use a barely damp soft cloth, then dry the surface immediately. Avoid soaking seams, caps or electrical parts. Spray nothing directly onto the lamp; liquid can run into joints, fittings or the base.
Avoid harsh products
Abrasive pads, powdered cleaners, solvent-based products and strong household chemicals can scratch glass, alter patina or leave residue. Metal polishes may remove or unevenly brighten an intentionally dark finish. If a maker supplies specific care instructions, follow those first.
Clean the base separately
Dust a metal or resin base with a soft cloth. Do not assume an aged-looking finish should be polished. Decorative patina is often part of the intended appearance. Keep moisture away from switches, cable entries and bulb holders.
Check the shade while cleaning
Look for loose pieces, open solder joints, sharp edges or cracks that have changed. Small variations in solder and glass texture are normal; movement or structural damage is not. Stop handling a damaged shade and seek advice from an experienced stained-glass repairer.
Bulbs and fittings
With power disconnected and the lamp cool, remove dust from accessible bulbs using a dry cloth. Replace failed bulbs with the correct cap, dimensions and rating. Never exceed the fitting's maximum wattage.
Moving and storage
Remove the shade where the product design allows and support it with both hands. Wrap shade and base separately in soft, non-abrasive material. Do not place heavy objects on top of the glass, and store in a dry area protected from impact.
How often should it be cleaned?
There is no fixed schedule. A quick dry dust every few weeks may be enough in a quiet room; kitchens and busy rooms may need attention more often. Regular light care avoids the need for aggressive cleaning.
