Pendant Light Hanging Height Guide
The correct pendant height depends on what lies beneath it. A fitting above a fixed table can hang lower than one in an open walkway, where safe head clearance is essential.
Measure the total drop
Include the ceiling rose, chain or rod, shade and decorative finial. Shade height is not the same as the complete installed drop.
Above a dining table
Use seated sightlines as the main test. Mark the proposed lowest point with string and check that the shade does not block faces or expose bulbs.
Above a kitchen island
The light should reach the worktop without obstructing standing users. For several pendants, measure spacing from shade edges as well as centre points.
In an open room or hallway
Protect comfortable head clearance for regular users and moving furniture. On stairs, assess the fitting from different steps and landings.
High and sloping ceilings
Longer drops can bring light to a useful level. Confirm whether the suspension is adjustable and whether the ceiling rose suits a slope.
Make a mock-up
Hang a lightweight cardboard shape matching the shade diameter and lowest point. View it from doors, seats and work areas before installation.
