E14 vs E27 Bulbs for Tiffany Lamps

E14 and E27 describe two sizes of Edison screw bulb cap. The number refers to the approximate screw diameter in millimetres. They are not interchangeable, so identify the holder before buying a replacement.

What is E14?

E14 is the smaller Edison screw fitting, often used where shade space is limited or a fitting takes several smaller bulbs. Common shapes include candle and small round bulbs.

What is E27?

E27 is the larger Edison screw fitting frequently used in table, floor and ceiling lamps. A larger cap does not automatically mean a brighter bulb; brightness depends on lumens.

Identify the correct cap

Check the product specification, label near the holder or existing bulb. Do not judge from a photograph and never force a bulb into the wrong holder. Ask the retailer or a competent electrician if markings are unclear.

Check physical size

The bulb must fit beneath the shade. Compare overall height and width, especially with candle shapes, decorative globes and compact shades.

Brightness and colour

Use lumens to compare output. Warm-white light around 2700K generally complements stained glass. Dense blue or purple shades may need more output for useful light.

Wattage and dimming

Stay within the stated maximum wattage. If dimming is required, the LED and dimmer must be compatible. Use matching bulbs in multi-light fittings.

Checklist

  • Correct E14 or E27 cap.
  • Bulb fits physically beneath the shade.
  • Suitable lumens and colour temperature.
  • Maximum wattage observed.
