Why Does Tiffany Glass Look Dark When the Lamp Is Off?
Stained glass is designed to be illuminated from behind. When the lamp is off, you see mainly light reflected from the front surface. When it is switched on, light passes through the glass, revealing colour, streaks and texture that were much less visible before.
Transmitted light and reflected light
Ordinary room light strikes the outside of an unlit shade and reflects towards you. Internal bulb light travels through the glass. These two viewing conditions can make the same piece appear completely different.
Dense colours absorb more light
Deep blue, purple and red glass may look nearly opaque in a dim room. Pale cream, amber and light green usually reveal more colour when unlit and transmit more bulb light.
Texture changes the effect
Ripples, streaks and opalescent areas scatter light unevenly. When illuminated, this creates depth and highlights. Without internal light, the same texture may look muted or cloudy.
The bulb matters
Warm-white LEDs around 2700K strengthen amber, red and green tones. Cooler bulbs can emphasise blue but change the overall atmosphere. Bulb position, frosting and lumen output also affect how evenly the shade glows.
Room daylight matters
A shade near a bright window may show more unlit colour than one in a dark corner. Product photographs can also vary depending on exposure and whether studio lighting shines through the shade.
Is darkness a defect?
Usually not. A major change between unlit and illuminated appearance is a normal characteristic of coloured glass. Structural cracks, loose pieces or open joints are separate issues that should be inspected.
What to check before buying
- Look for photographs with the lamp on and off.
- Consider whether the lamp is mainly decorative or task lighting.
- Check glass density and shade opening.
- Compare bulb cap, lumens and colour temperature.
