Are Tiffany Lamps Fragile?
A stained-glass shade is more robust than its many small pieces may suggest because the metal seams join them into one structure. It is still glass, however, and can be damaged by impact, twisting or poor handling.
Why the shade can feel heavy
Real glass, solder lines, support rings and caps add weight. Larger shades may be considerably heavier than fabric or thin moulded shades. The base or ceiling support must be designed for the complete fitting.
Safe everyday handling
Switch off and allow the lamp to cool. Support a removable shade with both hands and never carry the complete lamp by its shade, cap or pull chains. Move the base separately where the design allows.
Stable placement
Use a level surface, keep the base fully supported and route cables where they cannot be pulled. Avoid narrow table edges, door swings and busy routes. Consider children and pets when choosing a position.
What normal variation looks like
Small differences in glass colour, texture and solder lines are expected in hand-assembled shades. These are not the same as a loose piece, open joint or crack running through the glass.
Inspecting damage
If a section moves, an edge feels sharp or a crack changes, stop handling the shade. Do not apply household glue or tape to a visible repair. Seek advice from an experienced stained-glass repairer.
Moving and storage
Remove bulbs and detachable shades where appropriate. Wrap shade and base separately in soft, non-abrasive material and protect them from pressure. Never stack heavy objects on the glass.
Checklist
- Lift the base, not the shade.
- Use two hands for removable glass shades.
- Keep the lamp stable and cables protected.
- Distinguish natural variation from structural movement.
- Use specialist repair for damaged glass or joints.
