How to Measure for a Replacement Tiffany Ceiling Light
Replacing a ceiling light is not simply a matter of choosing a shade with a similar diameter. The new fitting must suit the ceiling height, cover or address the existing fixing area and leave safe access for bulbs and cleaning.
Record the existing fitting before removal
Measure the ceiling rose or backplate, the widest part of the shade and the full drop from ceiling to the lowest point. Photograph the fitting and surrounding ceiling in good light. Note any paint lines, screw holes or marks that could remain visible after replacement.
Measure the available headroom
In an open walking route, compare floor-to-ceiling height with the proposed fitting's total projection. Include the rose, chain, rod, shade and finial. Above a fixed table, a pendant can hang lower, but it should remain within the furniture footprint and outside normal sightlines.
Check the ceiling rose dimensions
A smaller new rose may expose old decoration or fixing marks. A larger rose may conflict with coving, beams or nearby detectors. Rose size does not prove fixing compatibility; the electrician must assess the electrical point and the structure behind it.
Allow for shade width
Check doors, tall cupboards, sloping ceilings and nearby walls. In a narrow room or landing, a wide shade can feel intrusive even when head clearance is adequate. Mark the proposed diameter with a lightweight paper template or tape.
Confirm weight and support
Tiffany-style glass shades can be heavier than plain fabric or plastic shades. Do not assume the existing hook or bracket is suitable. Give the new fitting's weight and mounting details to a qualified electrician so the ceiling support can be assessed.
Plan bulb and cleaning access
Some fittings need clearance below or beside the shade for bulb replacement. Check lamp-holder type, bulb length and how the shade is secured. On a high ceiling, decide how the fitting will be safely reached for routine maintenance.
