How to Choose a Tiffany Lamp for Reading
A beautiful shade does not automatically make a good reading lamp. Useful reading light depends on where the bulb sits in relation to the page, how the shade directs light and whether the lamp can be positioned close to the chair without glare.
Start with the reading position
Sit in the chair you normally use and note where the book, magazine or device is held. The light should reach the page from the side or slightly behind the shoulder without casting a strong shadow from your head or hand.
Check the shade height
For a table lamp, include the table height and total lamp height. A shade that is too high can expose the bulb at seated eye level; one that is too low may trap light below the book. With a floor lamp, compare the lower shade edge with your seated shoulder and eye level.
Look at shade openings
Many Tiffany shades direct most light downward, which can suit reading if the lamp is close enough. Dense dark glass may reduce side light, while an open lower edge can provide a clearer pool on the page. Product dimensions help more than a room photograph.
Choose useful lumens
Compare bulb output in lumens and stay within the fitting's rating. The amount needed varies with eyesight, page contrast and surrounding light. A dimmable arrangement can be useful, but the lamp, bulb and control must all be compatible.
Control colour and glare
Warm-white light generally complements stained glass and feels comfortable in a living room. Very warm light can reduce contrast for some tasks, while cool light may feel harsh. Use a bulb shape that remains inside the shade and is not directly visible.
Table lamp or floor lamp?
A table lamp works when a stable side table places it close to the page. A floor lamp avoids using tabletop space and can be moved beside a chair, provided its base and cable stay outside the walking route. Stability and switch reach matter in both cases.
Reading-lamp checklist
- Test the proposed lamp height while seated.
- Keep the bulb outside direct eye line.
- Check downward light reaches the page.
- Compare lumens, fitting and maximum rating.
- Plan a safe base, cable route and reachable switch.
