How to Move and Store a Tiffany Lamp Safely
A Tiffany-style lamp should be moved as a group of supported components, not carried as one assembled object. The shade can be heavy, the base may be unevenly balanced and small fittings are easy to lose.
Photograph the lamp first
Take clear photographs from several angles and record how the shade, harp, finial, chain or other parts fit together. Keep the manufacturer's instructions if available. These references make careful reassembly much easier.
Disconnect and cool
Unplug portable lamps and allow bulbs and metalwork to cool. Remove bulbs and pack them separately. Fixed ceiling or wall fittings should be disconnected by a qualified electrician, who can also advise on the weight and safe removal sequence.
Remove the shade correctly
Support the shade with both hands and follow the fitting's instructions. Do not lift the entire lamp by the shade, finial or electrical cable. Place the shade on a padded, stable surface while other components are prepared.
Wrap without applying pressure
Use clean, soft material around the shade, followed by protective cushioning that does not press hard against raised solder lines or decorative details. Avoid adhesive tape directly on glass, metalwork or finishes. Fill empty box space so the item cannot shift, but do not compress the shade.
Box components separately
A heavy base can damage a shade if packed in the same box. Use a strong box for each main component and place small screws, finials and brackets in labelled bags. Attach the parts bag to the appropriate box without allowing metal pieces to contact the glass.
Choose the storage environment
Store boxes upright in a dry, stable indoor environment away from large temperature changes, leaks and direct sunlight. Do not place heavy objects on top. Keep the boxes off a damp floor and label them as fragile with the correct orientation.
Inspect before reassembly
Unpack on a clear padded surface. Check glass panels, solder lines, cable, plug, holder and fixings before use. If anything is loose, cracked or electrically damaged, stop and seek suitable repair advice.
