How to Change a Bulb in a Tiffany Lamp Safely

Changing a bulb is simple only when the lamp is stable, cool and disconnected from power. Tiffany-style shades can be heavy and their metal edges may be close to the bulb, so a few careful checks protect both the glass and the fitting.

Switch off and disconnect the lamp

For a table or floor lamp, switch it off and unplug it before touching the bulb. For a fixed wall or ceiling fitting, isolate the appropriate circuit if the bulb cannot be changed safely with the normal switch alone. If access or isolation is uncertain, use a qualified electrician.

Let the bulb and shade cool

Wait until the bulb, lamp holder and nearby metalwork are cool. Heat can make a bulb uncomfortable to grip and may place unnecessary stress on glass. Never spray cleaner or use a damp cloth near a warm lamp.

Stabilise the lamp

Place a table lamp on a firm surface and keep one hand available to steady the base. Do not lift or twist the lamp by its shade. For a floor lamp, make sure the base cannot rock. Use appropriate access equipment for a ceiling fitting; do not stretch from furniture.

Remove the old bulb gently

Hold the bulb, not the shade or decorative frame. Turn a screw bulb anti-clockwise without forcing it. For other lamp-holder types, follow the fitting instructions. If a bulb is stuck, broken or the holder moves, stop rather than applying more force.

Choose the correct replacement

Match the lamp-holder type, voltage and permitted maximum wattage. With LEDs, also check physical length and diameter: an oversized bulb can touch the shade or remain visible below it. Select lumens and colour temperature according to the light required.

Fit and test

Insert the bulb straight and tighten only until secure. Restore power and check for flicker, unusual noise, heat or movement in the holder. Switch off immediately if anything appears wrong.

Useful habits

  • Keep the lamp instructions and bulb specification.
  • Replace bulbs with clean, dry hands.
  • Never exceed the fitting's rating.
  • Do not allow the bulb to touch glass or metal shade panels.
  • Ask an electrician to inspect damaged holders, cables or switches.
