What to Do If a Tiffany Lamp Is Damaged

A cracked glass panel is visible, but loose metalwork, a moving lamp holder or damaged cable can be equally important. Stop using the lamp first, then assess whether the problem is decorative, structural or electrical.

Disconnect the lamp

Switch off and unplug a portable lamp. For a fixed ceiling or wall fitting, isolate the circuit if it cannot be left safely switched off and contact a qualified electrician. Do not continue testing a lamp with exposed wire, a loose holder, burning smell or unusual heat.

Protect people from glass

Keep children and pets away from the area. Wear suitable hand protection when collecting loose pieces and do not run bare hands across a cracked panel. Save identifiable glass fragments in a rigid labelled container; they may help a specialist match colour and texture.

Do not force the shade back into shape

A Tiffany-style shade works as a joined structure. Pressing one area can transfer stress to neighbouring glass and solder lines. Do not lift the lamp by the shade or use adhesive tape, household glue or improvised solder as a permanent repair.

Check the base and supports

If the base is bent, unstable or cracked, keep the shade separate and supported on a padded surface. A damaged harp, finial, chain or bracket should be replaced with a component suitable for the lamp's weight and design.

Separate electrical and glass repairs

A stained-glass conservator or experienced lamp-restoration specialist can advise on cracked panels and solder work. A qualified electrician should inspect cables, plugs, switches, lamp holders and fixed wiring. One specialist may not cover both areas, so describe all symptoms clearly.

Photograph and document

Take pictures of the whole lamp, the damaged area and any maker's labels before dismantling. Record when the damage occurred and whether the lamp was operating. Keep all fittings and fragments labelled.

Safe temporary storage

  • Support the shade evenly on soft clean material.
  • Keep heavy bases separate from glass.
  • Store fragments in a rigid container.
  • Keep components dry and away from foot traffic.
  • Do not reconnect the lamp until repairs are complete and checked.
